Yard Dawgz Announce High School Athlete of the Week

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz are proud to announce that Anadarko High School junior Sheldon Wilson, has been awarded the Yard Dawgz High School Athlete of the Week.
Last weekend against Chickasha, Wilson had 13 carries for 235 yards and 5 touchdowns. The Warriors defeated the Chicks 41-7.
Each week this fall the Yard Dawgz will choose a standout high school football player to be awarded Athlete of the Week. This award will be chosen based on the student’s leadership and performance both on and off the playing field.
“Fall is always an exciting time of the year in Oklahoma and we are extremely excited about our new High School Athlete of the Week program. The Yard Dawgz have always been involved at the grass roots level and this program is another way for us to show our appreciation toward the Oklahoma City community,” said Yard Dawgz Head Coach Sparky McEwen.

Hyland Signs With Canadian Football League

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz defensive back, David Hyland, has signed with the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League.
Hyland came out in his rookie year this season with a bang. He led the Yard Dawgz in total tackles (92) and interceptions (8). Hyland was one interception away from tying the Yard Dawgz single season interception record of 9 held by Fred Shaw. Hyland was named the Riddell Defensive Player of the Week for the league after his performance against Dallas on June 26. Hyland has been referred to as a “ball hawk” throughout the league with his ability to know where the ball is going at all times. He attended the Cleveland Browns training camp in 2009.
Hyland had an impressive career while at Morehead State University. In his junior season, he was named to the Sports Network All-America Third Team. He was a Sport Network and Football Gazette Mid Major All-American in 2007. Hyland was a three time All-PFL First Team defensive back selection. In 2007, Hyland was NCAA Division I FCS national statistical champion in interceptions per game. Hyland holds the FCS record for passes defended in a career (61) and has school records for interceptions in a season (8), interceptions in a career (21), tied the record for interceptions in a game (3), and has the longest interceptions return in school history (100 yards).
“David has been one of the hardest working football players that I have been associated with as a coach. His desire and passion to be successful is something that is very unique. Hyland’s special qualities include his athleticism mixed with the ability to pick up on the game and schemes as a young player. You could not find a classier or more professional player who was willing to give his time to the Oklahoma City community than David Hyland,” said Yard Dawgz Head Coach Sparky McEwen.

AFL Moves to 18-Game Schedule in 2011

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Arena Football League Commissioner, Jerry Kurz, announced today that the 2011 regular season schedule has been extended from 16 to 18 games. The league will consist of 19 teams and each will play 18 regular season games, with the option of two preseason games (one home and one away). The change was passed in an ownership vote last week during the league’s Board of Directors meeting in Phoenix, AZ.
“There has never been a better time for the Arena Football League,” said Commissioner Jerry Kurz. “The product is exciting, our economic model is sound and fans are demanding affordable family entertainment. Extending our season is a great decision, both from a business and fan perspective.”
The AFL has officially grown from 15 teams in 2010 to 19 by adding teams in Philadelphia, Pittsburg, San Jose and Kansas City. The Philadelphia Soul were the league champions in 2008 just prior to a dark year where the AFL made strong adjustments to its economic model. The league bounced back in 2010 with a very successful season in which the Spokane Shock beat the Tampa Bay Storm in Arena Bowl XXIII on August 20th.
“The new 2011 franchises are in key markets with dynamic ownership,” added Kurz.
“We are excited about the move to an 18 game regular season. This move will provide our fans with an additional regular season opportunity to see an action packed arena football game in the Cox Convention Center,” said Yard Dawgz General Manager Christie Cook.
The 2011 season will be the longest in league history. In its 23 years of existence, teams have played as many as 16 games in a season. The league had observed a 16 game schedule since 2003.

Yard Dawgz Fullback Signs With United Football League

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz fullback, James Develin, signed with the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League earlier this week.
Develin (6’3, 260) joined the Dawgz organization in Week 15 of the 2010 season appearing in the game against the Tulsa Talons. He attended Brown University where he earned second team All-Ivy honors. In his sophomore year, he recorded 28 unassisted tackles, 50 total tackles, led the Ivy League with 6 total sacks, and was ranked first in the league with 13.5 tackles for a loss. Develin also had 3 fumble recoveries ranking him second in the league.
“After acquiring Develin late in the season, we truly felt that we found a pretty good football player that was experienced and would someday be a great professional football player. Develin’s strength is his tremendous athleticism, as well as his ability to play multiple positions,” said Yard Dawgz Head Coach Sparky McEwen.

Tommy Grady at Miami Dolphins Camp

OKLAHOMA CITY— Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz QB Tommy Grady is in Miami, Fla., today trying out for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League. The Miami Dolphins contacted Yard Dawgz Head Coach Sparky McEwen earlier last week to set up a time for Grady to tryout for the team.
“This is a great opportunity for Tommy. Since his return to Oklahoma City, he has put in a lot of work to become a better quarterback both physically and mentally. This is a great example that hard work pays off. Tommy has definitely put in the hard work to give himself this opportunity,” said McEwen.
In his first full season as the Dawgz starting quarterback, Grady had 363 completions of 597 attempts with 17 interceptions for 4,307 passing yards and 81 touchdowns.
"It's a great opportunity. It says a lot about my whole team. I wouldn't be there if it weren't for the rest of these guys,” said Grady.

YARD DAWGZ FALL TO THE TALONS

OKLAHOMA CITY –
The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz fell to the Tulsa Talons 61-74, on Friday night in front of 7,702 fans at the Cox Convention Center. Tulsa’s offense proved to be a challenge for the Dawgz highly ranked defense.
The Talons started off the first quarter with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Justin Allgood to Donovan Morgan. Jerel Myers answered for the Dawgz with a 31-yard touchdown reception from Dawgz quarterback, Tommy Grady, tying the game. Allgood came back for the Talons with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Carlese Franklin, putting the Talons back in the lead. With a 1;55 left in the first, Grady threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Craig Fulton Jr. At the end of the first quarter the Dawgz trailed by one, 12-13.
The second quarter proved to be one of high scoring. Jeff Hughley came out with a 6-yard touchdown reception from Allgood, to start the second quarter. Jamar Ransom jumped in front of a Grady pass to step into the end zone for a Talons touchdown. Oklahoma City came back to score on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Grady to Xavier Lee. Allgood threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Morgan to widening the score gap. Grady answered with a 16-yard pass to Fulton Jr. Once again, the Talons answered with Franklin’s 8-yard touchdown reception from Allgood. On their last possession of the first half Chad Cook carried the ball 3 yards for a Dawgz touchdown. Heading into the locker at the half the Talons led the Dawgz 41-33.
The third quarter was much like the first quarter lots of back and forth scoring. Tulsa scored first with a 1-yard pass to Morgan from Allgood. Oklahoma City answered with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Grady to Myers. The Talons were the last to score in the third with when Allgood threw a 10-yard pass to Hughley. At the end of the fourth the Talons were leading the Dawgz 55-40.
For the fourth time in the game the Talons were the first to score in the fourth quarter. Allgood threw a 1-yard pass to Morgan to start the quarter. Grady answered by throwing a 5-yard touchdown pass to Robinson keeping the Dawgz in the game. On their next possession, Collin Taylor caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Allgood. The Dawgz came back with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Grady to Robinson. Kevin McCullough intercepted an Allgood pass on the Talons next offensive drive with only 2:30 left in the game, giving the Dawgz the ball back. Oklahoma City’s offense was able to turn their next possession into a touchdown with a 13-yard carry by Grady. The Dawgz were within a touchdown of tying the game. Tulsa had the final possession, which they turned into another score with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Morgan from Allgood. When the final buzzer went off the Dawgz fell to the Talons 61-74.

Yard Dawgz Stopped by Predators

OKLAHOMA CITY –
The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz fell to the Orlando Predators 21-49, on Saturday night in front of 12,343 fans at Amway Arena. Orlando’s defense held Oklahoma City to their lowest point total of the season. With the loss the Yard Dawgz fall to 6-9 on the season and are out of the 2010 playoff race.
The Dawgz got off to a quick start scoring on their first possession with a 15-yard pass to Timon Marshall from Tommy Grady. The Predators answered with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Robert Quiroga from Nick Hill. The Dawgz were unable to turn their next offensive drive into a score giving the ball back to the Predators. Hill threw a 27-yard pass to Bobby Sippio putting the Predators in the lead for the first time in the game. On Oklahoma City’s next possession Marlon Moye-Moore intercepted a pass intended for WR Xavier Lee, scoring for the Predators. At the end of the first quarter the Predators were up 21-7.
Oklahoma City had first possession in the second quarter, but were unable to score. Hill threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to Quiroga scoring for the Predators. Orlando went on to score one last time in the second quarter giving them a 35-7 lead over the Dawgz.
Coming out of the locker room after halftime the Dawgz had a refocused and were ready to play. The Dawgz also changed quarterbacks at the half with Xavier Lee replacing Tommy Grady. On their first possession, Chad Cook had a 3-yard carry putting the first points on the board for the Dawgz since the first quarter. Once again, Orlando answered with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Quiroga from Hill. Craig Fulton Jr. caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Lee putting the Dawgz back in the game. The third quarter ended with Orlando on top 42-21.
The fourth quarter was one of minimal action. Orlando scored on their first offensive drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Hill to Quiroga. Neither team would go on to score again in the fourth quarter. When the final buzzer sounded Orlando came out on top 49-21 and clinched the final spot in the American Conference playoff race.

OKLAHOMA CITY— The Yard Dawgz have partnered with the American Red Cross of Central Oklahoma and 10 metro area Jersey Mike’s to aid in the collection of stocking stuffers for the American Red Cross Christmas Stocking Program.
Starting Monday, July 26, 2010, all local Jersey Mike’s locations will be collection points for the campaign. For store locations please visit www.jerseymikes.com. Each store will collect both monetary and item donations from the following list.

OKC Yard Dawgz vs. Orlando Predators Game Preview

The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz take on the Orlando Predators, Saturday, July 24, at the Amway Arena in Orlando, Florida. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CST. Saturday’s match up is the first time the two teams will meet in the history of their franchises and will likely determine which team will be in the playoffs.
The Yard Dawgz head into Saturday’s match up after a disappointing loss to the Cleveland Gladiators 39-44, tying the season series against the Gladiators. The Dawgz are currently ranked 3rd in total defense and 2nd in pass defense proving to be the team’s greatest strength. This week’s game will prove to be a match up of the wills with both teams fighting for a playoff spot. The winner of the match up along with a loss by the Alabama Vipers to the Tampa Bay Storm will clinch the #4 seed in the American Conference.

Yard Dawgz Fall to Gladiators in Cleveland

OKLAHOMA CITY –
The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz fell to the Cleveland Gladiators 44-39, on Saturday night in front of 7,682 fans at Quicken Loans Arena. Cleveland’s defense stopped Oklahoma City’s final drive as time expired to preserve the victory. With the loss the Yard Dawgz fall to 6-8 this season.
The game got off to a quick start with the Dawgz scoring on their first possession with an 11-yard pass to Alvance Robinson from Tommy Grady. The Gladiators were unable to turn their first possession into a score with a fumble by QB John Dutton, which was recovered by Yard Dawg Brandon Perkins who returned it for a touchdown. Dutton answered with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Lewis putting the first points on the board for Cleveland. At the end of the first quarter the Dawgz led 13-7.
The second quarter began with Brent Holmes returning a missed field goal for 55 yards and a Gladiator touchdown. Cleveland went on to score another touchdown after Davion Mitchell forced a fumble. The Dawgz answered with a 13-yard pass to Xavier Lee from Grady. Heading into the locker at half time the Dawgz trialed by two points 21-19.
The Gladiators scored on the opening drive of the second half giving them a nine point lead. With 5:25 left in the third Lee, who had stepped in as quarterback after an injury to starter Tommy Grady, had a 30-yard carry for a Dawgz touchdown. In lieu of kicking the point after, Lee went for a two-point conversion with a pass to Jerel Myers. Cleveland scored on a 21-yard touchdown pass to Victor Williams from Dutton giving the Gladiators a eight-point lead heading into the fourth quarter 35-27.
The fourth quarter resulted in back and forth scoring between the two teams. The Dawgz were the first to score with a carry by Chad Cook, closing the score gap. On their next possession, Cleveland had to turn to kicker Matt Denny to kick a field goal giving them a five-point lead. Timon Marshall answered for Oklahoma City with an 8-yard touchdown reception putting the Dawgz in the lead for the first time since the first quarter, 39-38. The Gladiators came back with a 45-yard touchdown pass to Williams by Dutton. In the end Cleveland came out on top with a score of 44-39 over the Yard Dawgz.

Marshall Named AFL Ironman of the Week

OKLAHOMA CITY— The OKC Yard Dawgz are proud to announce that the Arena Football League has named WR Timon Marshall JLS Ironman of the Week. Marshall was awarded the JLS Ironman of the Week for his outstanding efforts both as a wide receiver and kick returner. This is Marshall’s second league award on the season.
Marshall battled the Barnstormers last weekend, leading Oklahoma City to its third straight victory. The wide receiver caught the Dawgz first touchdown of the night with a 14-yard reception from QB Tommy Grady. Marshall’s heroic moment came in the dying seconds of the game with a 26-yard catch to squeeze out the win over Iowa. The 52-42 victory was a record night for Marshall, with a season-high 151 receiving yards. Marshall ended the game with three touchdowns from 13 receptions, plus six kick-off returns for 70 yards.
Yard Dawgz Head Coach Sparky McEwen said “Timon Marshall exemplifies what arena football is all about in that he can play multiple positions and effect the game in many different ways. Timon has been a big part of the turnaround of the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz as we try to keep ourselves in playoff contention.”
Earlier this season, Marshall was awarded the Spalding Highlight of the Week for his game winning touchdown against the Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings with :33 left in the fourth quarter. In the same game against the BattleWings, Marshall ran back a missed field goal for a score to put Oklahoma City ahead 82-79 with only :04 remaining on the clock. Marshall’s return clinched the victory for the Dawgz.
Marshall has 70 receptions for 792 yards and 16 touchdowns this season. His return game is equally as impressive with 66 returns for 1,062 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Yard Dawgz travel to Cleveland, Ohio, Saturday, July 17, to take on the Cleveland Gladiators. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CST. The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz take on the Cleveland Gladiators, Saturday, July 17, at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CST. Saturday’s game marks the teams second meeting this season, which the Yard Dawgz lead 1-0.
The Yard Dawgz head into Saturday’s match up after defeating the Iowa Barnstormers 52-42, tying the season series against the Barnstormers. The Dawgz are currently ranked 3rd in total defense and 3rd in pass defense proving to be the team’s greatest strength. The early season match up between the Dawgz and Gladiators was a defensive battle and in the end Oklahoma City triumphed over Cleveland 63-50.
Yard Dawgz Head Coach Sparky McEwen commented, “We are excited to find ourselves in a must win situation. All of the hard work over a long season has truly paid off for the Dawgz. I can’t express enough the importance of going on the road and playing intense playoff football against the Gladiators. The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz went toe to toe with the Iowa Barnstormers Saturday night at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City in front of 5,415 fans. The game proved to as exciting as the earlier season matchup between the two franchises. The Dawgz were able to protect and build on the lead they had secured in the first half of play and came out with the 52-42 victory over the Barnstormers.
The Barnstormers were first on the board with a one yard touchdown run by their quarterback, Ryan Vena. The Dawgz answered right back with a 14 yard touchdown pass from Tommy Grady to Timon Marshall. On their next possession, the Barnstormers were marching down the field when Vena threw an interception to Dawgz defensive back, Fred Shaw. Shaw snatched the ball and sprinted 50 yards for a touchdown to give the Dawgz the lead, 14-7.
As the Barnstormers were threatening to score at the beginning of the second quarter, David Hyland forced and recovered a fumble by running back Rodney Filer, putting the ball back in the hands of the Dawgz offense. The Dawgz capitalized on the Barnstormer turnover and marched down the field for another touchdown, a two yard rush by Chad Cook. This put the Dawgz up 21-7. Vena found wide receiver Jesse Schmidt on a 5 yard route to cut the Dawgz lead to 21-14. The Barnstormer defense then stepped up and caused fumble by Grady which was recovered by lineman Charles Johnson. Just three plays later, Vena connected with Larry Kendrick to tie the game at 21. With the second half coming to a close, Grady found Jerel Myers for a 13 yard score giving the lead back to the Dawgz, 28-21.
The Dawgz received the ball first to start the second half and went on nearly an eight minute drive which resulted in a 23 yard Michael Salerno field goal, increasing the Dawgz lead to ten. Vena went on to connect with Kendrick on an 18 yard touchdown pass. This cut the Dawgz lead to 3, 31-28.
The fourth quarter proved to be one of battling offenses. First, Grady found Marshall on a 22 yard touchdown pass. Vena then looked to Kendrick for his third touchdown of the night. Grady found a big target on his next score, tight end Jeremy Ashcraft. Vena went back to Schmidt to keep the Barnstormers in the game. Next, Grady went back to Marshall for his third touchdown catch of the night. The Dawgz up by 10, gave the ball back to the Barnstormers with :56 left in the game. The Barnstormers moved the ball down to the Dawgz 3 yard line but on their next play, Vena was sacked for a seven yard loss by MK Bruce and Dustin Barno. On the next play, Vena looked to Schmidt for the score but the ball was intercepted by Yard Dawgz defensive back Sergio Gilliam which sealed the 52-42 victory for the Dawgz.
After the game, Head Coach Sparky McEwen commented, “This to date is one of our biggest victories. To come from where we started the season to where we are now says a lot about our ball club. We are now smack in the middle of the playoff race and truly control our own destiny. I feel that we are starting to peak at the right time.”
The Dawgz have now won three games in a row and will travel to Cleveland, Ohio to take on the Gladiators next Saturday, July 17th, at the Quicken Loans Arena. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 PM (CST). The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz take on the Iowa Barnstormers, Saturday, July 10, at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Okla. Kickoff is set for 7:05 p.m. CST. Saturday’s game marks the teams second meeting this season, which the Barnstormers lead 1-0.
The Yard Dawgz head into Saturday’s match up after defeating Bossier-Shreveport 70-44, winning the series against the BattleWings. The Dawgz are currently ranked 2nd in total defense and 1st in pass defense proving to be the team’s greatest strength. The early season match up between the Dawgz and Barnstormers was one that could have gone either way, but in the end Iowa came out on top (68-60).
Yard Dawgz Head Coach Sparky McEwen commented, “Going into this last quarter of the season, we find ourselves smack in the middle of a hot playoff race. Fortunately for us, we have started playing some of our best football of the season. The remaining teams on our schedule are all fighting for their playoff lives, which should make for an interesting four weeks of arena football. I really feel this is the most important time of the year for our fans to come out and support our team because they can truly make a difference at our home games. It is important to take advantage of home field as we push to make the playoffs.”
The Barnstormers are coming off of a 59-38 victory over the Dallas Vigilantes. QB Ryan Vena has proven to be one of Iowa’s greatest asset in both their passing and rushing games. He has 209 pass completions out of 337 attempts for 2613 yards for the season and 59 rushes for 232 yards and 17 touchdowns. The Dawgz defense will be on alert for Iowa’s rushing game, which is ranked 1st in the AFL.

Dawgz Win Series Against BattleWings

OKLAHOMA CITY –
The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz defeated the Bossier Shreveport BattleWings on Saturday at the CenturyTel Center in Bossier City, Louisiana, in front of an announced crowd of 3,382. Saturday night marked the second time these two franchises have met as members of the AFL. The two teams met six times as members of arenafootball2. The Dawgz secured the victory with their high powered offense and outstanding defensive effort.
The Dawgz offense got on the board first when Tommy Grady threw a 7-yard pass to Xavier Lee for a touchdown. Bossier-Shreveport answered quickly with a 4-yard touchdown pass to James Jordan from Jimmy Welker. The BattleWings turned around and scored once again before the end of the first quarter with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Welker to P.J. Berry. At the end of the first quarter the BattleWings led the Dawgz 14-7.
The Dawgz used the second quarter to move ahead of the BattleWings for good. Grady threw an 11-yard pass to Craig Fulton Jr. for a touchdown. An interception by defensive back, David Hyland, gave the Dawgz the ball back and provided the offense another chance to score. Timon Marshall caught an 11-yard pass from Grady putting the Dawgz in the lead for the second time in the game. After forcing a BattleWings fumble, Grady once again connected with Marshall with an 11-yard touchdown pass. With 1:59 left in the half the BattleWings scored for the first time in the second quarter with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Jordan by Welker. The Dawgz answered with a 33-yard touchdown pass by Grady to Fulton Jr. Before heading into the locker room Nick Gatto kicked a field goal for the BattleWings putting them within 11 points of the Dawgz 35-24.
The third quarter was one of minimal scoring. Bossier-Shreveport got off to a good start with a 1-yard carry by Jason Schule scoring. Fulton Jr. stepped up once again with a 14-yard touchdown reception from Grady. On the BattleWings’ next possession Sergio Gilliam caused a forced fumble, which was recovered by Dustin Barno who laterraled the ball to Brandon Perkins for another Yard Dawgz touchdown. Heading into the fourth quarter the Dawgz led the BattleWings 49-31.
Fulton Jr. caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Grady putting the first points of the fourth quarter on the board. The Dawgz defense once again held the BattleWings from scoring putting the offense in good field position. Marshall caught his third touchdown reception for the night from Grady with 8:40 left in the game. The BattleWings scored on their next two possessions with a 8-yard and 23-yard reception by Berry from Welker. The Dawgz were the last to put points on the board with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Grady to Chad Cook. When the buzzer sounded the Dawgz had defeated the BattleWings 70-44.

Hyland, Hunt and Fulton Jr. Named AFL Players of the Week

OKLAHOMA CITY— The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz are proud to announce that the Arena Football League has named DB David Hyland, WR Al Hunt and WR Craig Fulton Jr. players of the week. Hyland was named the Riddell Defensive Player of the Week for his impressive performance last weekend against the Dallas Vigilantes. Hunt and Fulton Jr. were both awarded the Cutters Catch of the Week for their touchdown receptions in last weekend’s game.
Hyland dominated the Dallas offense with key plays that would ultimately lead to the Yard Dawgz win over the Vigilantes. To start the fourth quarter, Hyland intercepted a pass by BJ Hall, leading to an offensive touchdown putting the Dawgz in position to win the game. Hyland’s highlight came with 0:03 seconds left in the game when he intercepted the ball keeping the Vigilantes from scoring and stealing the win. Hyland also had five tackles and two pass break-ups.
“This award is a direct credit the hard work and will to win that David shows day in and day out. Not only has he picked up the arena game fast, but he has also shown a tremendous amount of leadership in encouraging our defense to have more and more confidence as we make a playoff push,” said Yard Dawgz Head Coach Sparky McEwen.
Hunt and Fulton Jr. both caught touchdown passes at pivotal points in the game against Dallas. The first came in the second quarter when Hunt caught a 24-yard pass to take a 13-10 lead over the Vigilantes. With 0:15 seconds left in the game, Fulton Jr. caught a 24-yard pass scoring the game winning touchdown. The Yard Dawgz clinched the win over the Vigilantes with a final score of 35-31.
“Both of these players stepped up at big times when needed by the offense. Both Al and Craig have a level of competiveness and desire to win ballgames,” said McEwen.

Dawgz Win Defensive Battle With Vigilantes

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz faced the Dallas Vigilantes Saturday night at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City in front of 5,114 fans. The game proved to be a battle of the two defenses with the teams combining for 4 interceptions (2 OKC – 2 DAL), 5 turnover on downs (2 OKC – 3 DAL), 5 sacks (4 OKC – 1 DAL) and two forced fumbles (1 OKC – 1 DAL).
The Dawg defense sacked Vigilante quarterback BJ Hall twice on their opening drive. The first sack was by Brandon Perkins for an eleven yard loss. On the next play, Dustin Barno sacked Hall for a six yard loss. The Dawgz were first on the board with a Craig Fulton Jr. 18 yard touchdown catch from Yard Dawgz quarterback, Tommy Grady. The Dawgz defense stepped up again with an MK Bruce sack of Hall on fourth down giving the ball back to the Dawgz. The Dawgz defense was successful in keeping the Vigilantes offense out of the end zone in the first quarter.
The Vigilante defense stepped up in the second quarter by sacking Grady and forcing a fumble into the end zone for a Dallas score by Brandon Pahula. Grady threw an interception on his next possession giving the ball back to the Vigilantes. Grady turned it around with a 24 yard touchdown pass to Al Hunt putting the Dawgz back on top 13-10. Former Yard Dawg, Matt Fields, found the end zone after a 26 yard pass from Hall to give the Vigilantes the lead, 17-13. Yard Dawgz emergency kicker, Michael Salerno, drove home a 24 yard field goal to close out the second quarter. Going into the locker room, the Dawgz were down one, 16-17.
The defenses continued to battle it out in the third quarter. The Dawgz turned it over on fourth down on their opening possession but got the ball back after Mike Brown forced a fumble which was recovered by MK Bruce. The only score of the quarter was a 31 yard Vigilante touchdown pass from Hall to Fields.
Like the Dawgz last two games, it seemed as if this game would come down to the last play of the game. With one minute remaining and down by 2, the Dawgz attempted an onside kick. The Vigilantes got possession of the ball with a short field but the Dawgz defense held tough and forced the Vigilantes to attempt a field goal. Lewis missed the field goal wide left giving the Dawgz possession with :41 remaining on the clock. Grady found Fulton on a 24 yard pass with only 15.4 remaining on the clock giving the Dawgz the lead, 35-31. The chance of a Dallas victory can to an end with a David Hyland interception of Hall’s pass as time expired. The Dawgz went on to celebrate the 35-31 victory.
After the game, Head Coach Sparky McEwen commented, “This is one of the best defensive efforts that I have witnessed since my affiliation with the AFL began in 1998. I could not be more proud of our team’s effort and perseverance to secure the win.”

Yard Dawgz Participate in Bank of Oklahoma's Book Drive

OKLAHOMA CITY—The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz are hosting “Bring a Book to the Game” on June 26, 2010, in conjunction with Bank of Oklahoma to collect children’s books for their annual Book Drive campaign.
“By helping young children develop a love for reading now, we can engage them in a learning process that will help them become successful adults in our community,” said John Higginbotham, Bank of Oklahoma-OKC Chief Operating Officer. “We encourage everyone to donate a book at any BOK branch throughout June and at the Yard Dawgz game on June 26 to make sure any child who needs a book can have one.”
The Yard Dawgz encourage fans to donate a new or gently used children’s book to the BOK Book Drive at their next home game on June 26. Each donor will receive a ticket to that night’s game with the donation of a children’s book. Tickets are limited to one per book per customer.
“Finding ways to incorporate community partners into our game day is something we strive to do and we are excited to partner with Bank of Oklahoma on their June book drive to benefit the Oklahoma City Junior League. We feel this is a worthy cause and will benefit many children within the Oklahoma City area,” said Christie Cook, OKC Yard Dawgz General Manager.

In the early season matchup between the two teams, the Vigilante offense dominated the time clock, but look for that to change with the Dawgz reenergized and hard-hitting defense.

Dawgz Snake Bitten by Rattlers

OKLAHOMA CITY –
The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz lost a well-fought game on Friday night in Phoenix against the Arizona Rattlers in front of 10,115 fans. The game came down to the Dawgz last possession, a failed two-point conversion. Had the conversion been successful, the Dawgz would have escaped with the upset win.
The Dawgz gained momentum quickly by scoring on the first play of the first possession with a 44-yard touchdown pass by Tommy Grady to receiver Craig Fulton Jr. The Rattlers QB Nick Davila answered by throwing a 13-yard pass to JJ McKelvey for a touchdown. Gaining the lead at the end of the first quarter Grady connected with Fulton Jr. on a 28-yard touchdown pass. Heading into the second quarter the Dawgz led the Rattlers 13-7.
To start the second quarter, Tod Devoe caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Davila putting the Rattlers up by one. Fulton Jr. went in for his third touchdown of the night after receiving a 5-yard pass from Grady. Devoe then carried the ball in 3-yards for a touchdown once again putting Arizona up by a point. Grady threw another touchdown pass for 25 yards to Xavier Lee, his first touchdown of the evening. Davila connected with Devoe for a 6-yard touchdown pass, giving Devoe his third touchdown in the second quarter. With :58 left on the clock in the first half, Andrew Eminger kicked a 22-yard field goal which put the Dawgz in the lead 29-28 as they headed into the locker room at half-time.
The third quarter proved to be one of minimal scoring. David Hyland intercepted a pass by Davila during the Rattlers’ first possession, which the Dawgz were unable to capitalize on. Davila threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to McKelvey, putting the Rattlers in the lead once again. The Dawgz answered by scoring on an 8-yard pass by Grady to Timon Marshall. At the end of the third quarter the Dawgz and Rattlers were tied at 35-35.
The Rattlers were the first to score in the fourth quarter. Rod Windsor caught a 4-yard pass from Davila giving the Rattlers a seven point advantage. Grady threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Fulton Jr., his fourth on the night. Windsor then rushed for 1 yard scoring his second touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Dawgz came back to tie the game with a 24-yard touchdown pass by Grady to Alvance Robinson, his first score as a Yard Dawg. Riley Swanson recovered the Dawgz on-side kick for a 6 yard score. Down by 7 points the Dawgz scored as time expired on the clock with Lee’s 19-yard reception from Grady. The Dawgz decided to go for the win by attempting a two point conversion with no time on the clock versus send the game into overtime. The two point conversion was denied by the Rattlers defense, which resulted in the Dawgz losing by a single point (55-56).
Dawgz return home on Saturday, June 26, to host the Dallas Vigilantes. Yard Dawgz Add Defensive Standouts

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz have added two standout defensive players to their roster. Kevin McCullough and Mkristo Bruce both bring valuable playing experiences to the Dawgz defense.
Kevin McCullough (FB/LB, 6’2, 250) joins the Yard Dawgz after spending the first half of the 2010 season with the Spokane Shock. McCullough got his start at the University of Cincinnati where he accumulated 73 unassisted tackles, 132 total tackles, 24.5 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, and 2 interceptions in two years as a starter. After his college career he went on to play for Spokane as part of the arenafootball2 league. As a member of the Shock, he appeared in both the 2008 and 2009 Arena Cup Championship games winning in 2009. So far this season, McCullough has 21 unassisted tackles, 33 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for a loss, 2 interceptions for 48 yards, 3 breakups, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 fumble recoveries. McCullough needed no time to make his presence known as a member of the Yard Dawgz defense. In the fourth quarter of the Dawgz game versus the Tampa Bay Storm, McCullough intercepted a Brett Dietz pass and returned it 46 yards for a touchdown, which gave the Dawgz the lead.
Mkristo Bruce (OL/DL, 6’6, 250) comes to Oklahoma City after spending time in the NFL. He attended the Miami Dolphins camp in 2006-2007, was on the practice squad for the Oakland Raiders in 2007-2008 and was on the Jacksonville Jaguars active roster for the 2008-2009 season. Bruce has a year of experience in the AFL after spending the 2008 season with the Arizona Rattlers.
“The addition of these two outstanding linebackers has solidified our defense as being one of the top defenses in the AFL,” said Yard Dawgz Head Coach Sparky McEwen.

The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz take on the Arizona Rattlers, Friday, June 11, at the US Airways Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Kickoff is set for 9:30 p.m. CST. Friday’s game marks the first time the teams have met in franchise history.
The Yard Dawgz head into Friday’s match up after a heartbreaking loss to the Tampa Bay Storm (50-48) in a game of back and forth scoring. The Dawgz defense is currently ranked 3rd in total defense and 2nd in pass defense proving to be the team’s greatest asset. On the other hand, the Arizona Rattlers offense comes into this week’s game highly ranked. They are ranked 3rd in scoring offense, 2nd in total offense and 2nd and pass offense. The Dawgz hard hitting defense against the Rattlers quick scoring offense will prove to be an all-around great arena football experience.
Yard Dawgz Head Coach Sparky McEwen commented, “After a very physical game against the Tampa Bay Storm, our guys realize they can play in a hostile environment and they can compete against the best teams the league has to offer. With the new guys we have on board, it was important for us to put them into duty right away so they can feel comfortable within our system. Our team can expect the same type of tough game when we visit the Arizona Rattlers, which are fighting for a playoff spot just as we are. We expect another tough football game this week.”
The Rattlers are coming off a big win against the Milwaukee Iron, whom they beat by one point in overtime. Nick Davila, Rattlers QB, compiled his second 400-yard passing game of the season last week against the Iron. He is currently ranked 2nd in the league in passing yards (337.50). Davila is a key component in Arizona’s offensive game.
